The World Cup of Writing: Barney Ronay
One of the things I want to do with this blog is highlight current examples of writers who, in my opinion, use the English language beautifully.
As it's the World Cup at the moment and I'm following it avidly, I'll start by pointing to the work of one of my favourite football journalists, Barney Ronay of the Guardian. I've always enjoyed his wry humour, rich vocabulary, and highly imaginative similes and metaphors.
In this piece from a few days ago, he used his trip to Volgograd (to cover England's game against Tunisia) as an opportunity to delve into his family history.
